Our History
Women’s Action Network (WAN) was formed in January 2005. It evolved from a group known as The Greenville Business and Professional Women (BPW). Business and Professional Women is a national organization that– Promotes equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.
Although BPW had served Greenville for many years, by 2002-2003, membership had declined to only 4-6 members. These members felt that the national organization no longer reflected the needs of local women. The high dues, with 75% going to the national level, were also a concern. Reflecting on these challenges, charter members of WAN met for six months to discuss creating a local-focused organization rooted in the community’s needs. This led to the decision to transition from BPW to the newly formed WAN.
To honor BPW’s legacy, funds in the BPW treasury were entrusted to the Greater Greenville Community Foundation to establish a high school scholarship in BPW’s name. Over time, WAN continued contributing until the fund reached $10,000, allowing it to offer a scholarship in perpetuity.
WAN was founded to be a community-centered organization, focused on supporting local women through recognition, scholarships, and grants. With a commitment to networking, education, and service, WAN provides opportunities for members who are passionate about giving back to Greenville and the Montcalm County area by empowering women to thrive in all professional and personal spheres.WAN is a nonpartisan group. Our Initiatives – One of WAN’s first projects was supporting a holiday party for local families. Since then, WAN’s contributions have grown to include high school and adult scholarships, an annual Woman of the Year award, and ongoing support for various local initiatives. Our largest fundraiser each year is managing Veterans Park during the Danish Festival.

In 2005, WAN also launched The Hat Rack, providing free hats, wigs, and scarves to men, women, and children experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions. This project began in the basement of a member’s business and has since expanded to a storefront, providing a vital service to our community.
